Literary Arts students study short fiction for two semesters during their four years at CSA.
Freshman students take a Short Fiction I course, where they study contemporary writers with particular emphasis on studying writers of African, Caribbean, Latin, Asian, and Middle Eastern descent. The beginning short fiction course also introduces students to different types and forms of fiction, development of point of view, character, dialogue, description, and pacing.
Short Fiction II provides sophomore students with advanced methods of self-revision. At this level, advanced peer-to-peer workshopping labs are coupled with individualized office hours with the instructor. The intermediate short fiction course also introduces students to methods for creating short stories for the purpose of publication.
