Students who study Literary Arts have one semester of poetry instruction during their freshman and sophomore years in which they study poetry techniques, forms, as well as, past and current poets.
The beginning poetry curriculum introduces students to poetic terms, techniques, and basic forms during their first semester studies. Through beginning poetry, Literary Arts students also study contemporary poets they are not typically exposed to in traditional public high school literature courses. Particular emphasis is placed on studying writers of African, Caribbean, Latin, Asian, and Middle Eastern descent.
The intermediate poetry curriculum introduces students to key poetic movements (The Beat Period, Black Arts Movement, Slam, etc.). The course also provides advanced self-revision and methods for creating collections of poetry for publication.
