AP Studio Arts
This course is for highly motivated students who have succeeded in previous art courses. This class enables students to do college level work in either two-dimensional or three- dimensional design.
Completion of each section of the portfolio is required, totaling approximately 25-30 works of art.
Students in this course are required to submit a portfolio to the College Board.
Architectural Studies
The course introduces the elements of architectural design; styles and themes from the past and the present are explored to create architectural models.
Art 1
Year one, the course provides the opportunities to manipulate media, techniques, and art processes to create a series of art works, to critique works of art as part of the artistic process and to understand the work of others
Art 2
Year two, the course continues to provide the opportunity to manipulate media and art processes to create art works, to critique works of art, and to understand and ascribe meaning to the work of others.
Art 3
Year three, the course provides the opportunity to develop individualistic styles, to experiment with media and art processes to create art works, to critique one’s own work and to understand the work of others.
Art 4
Year four, the course provides the opportunity to refine individualistic styles, to continue to experiment with media and art processes to create art works, to critique one’s own work and to understand the work of others.
Art History
Year four, the course provides the opportunity to refine individualistic styles, to continue to experiment with media and art processes to create art works, to critique one’s own work and to understand the work of others.
Ceramics 1
Ceramics 1 provides instruction to create functional and non-functional ceramic objects; to use glazes and a kiln; to explore the work of ceramic artists; and to critique and discuss valuing of ceramics as art.
Ceramics 2
Ceramics 2 continues to provide instruction for creating functional and non-functional ceramic objects; exploring the work of ceramic artists; critiquing and discussing valuing of ceramics as art.
Drawing/Painting
The course provides instruction on manipulating and controlling a variety of media to create a series of drawings and paintings; criticism and reflection of one’s own work and those of other artists.
Fundamentals of Design
This course is organized to explore two-dimensional (drawing, painting, printmaking and graphic design) and three-dimensional (ceramics and weaving) art forms from a design perspective. Students demonstrate an understanding of how to use the art elements and principles to create works of art.
Graphic Design
The course prepares students to create graphic designs that clearly communicate ideas, messages, and information by manipulating design forms, media, techniques, processes and technology.
Independent Visual Arts
The course allows the advanced student to continue in the learning process in visual arts beyond the district visual arts curriculum. The content to be studied will be determined collaboratively with the teacher and the student.
KAP Art: Color and Design
This course is a post-secondary option for students in partnership with Kenyon College. Students in this course will be introduced to the use of color and two dimensional design. The perceptual and psychological qualities of color will be explored through color exercises and multimedia projects. Conceptual and formal growth will be stressed. Students must be accepted by Kenyon
Kenyon Art
This course offered through Kenyon College explores the physical and psychological characteristics of color pigments and the varying capabilities of design from the perspective of residential housing, fashion and visual arts.
Kenyon Digital Imaging
This class introduces students to an area of fine arts that utilize digital tools to engage in aesthetic and conceptual practices in contemporary art. Studio projects will encompass the fundamentals of composition and develop technical skills with a variety of computer tools. Through theory and practice students will come to understand the relationship of arts in culture, define one’s own personal aesthetic vision, and develop effective skills in art criticism.
Line Drawing
The course provides the opportunity to study and portray the anatomy of the human form using a variety of media. Live models are also included as part of the course.
Mixed Media 1
The course provides opportunities to create various art objects based on form and function. Students explore how world cultures, traditions and technologies influence the creation of art objects such as pottery, jewelry and textiles.
Mixed Media 1
The course is a continuation of Mixed Media 1. It provides opportunities to explore the creation of art objects based on world cultures and personal ideas; and to critique art objects and ascribe value to them.
Photography 1
The course includes basic instruction on cameras; how to use various types; various techniques of still photography; and the uses of a variety of darkroom equipment. Students explore a variety of viewpoints about photography as a visual art medium.
Photography 2
The course focuses on photojournalism and portrait photography. Students learn to utilize techniques and strategies in photography to develop a variety of projects, critique photographic works of art and make judgments about student work.
Printmaking
The course provides the opportunity to explore a variety of printmaking techniques including the use of technology; to create art prints using various techniques and to critique print works of art.
Sculpture 1
This course provides students an opportunity to explore a variety of sculptures and techniques which include creation of three-dimensional art with a focus on space and form; experimentation with a variety of media and critiques of student work and renown sculptors.
Sculpture 2
Year two, the course continues to provide instruction in manipulating media and art processes to create sculptural art works. Students will continue to critique works of art, and to understand and ascribe meaning to the work of others.
