The Literary Arts department asks students to use their creative thinking skills to take readers to another world through stories, poems, essays, articles and plays. For the past four years, a CSA poet has been chosen as one of Playhouse Square's Slam-U Poetry Contest finalists. Senior Eric Odum and CSA alumnus, Akeem Rollins were two of Cleveland's team that competed in the national competition in Washington D.C. in July 2008. A full production of, "It's a Failure to Communicate" by CSA Festival playwright and 11th grade Language Arts major, Lindsay Smith was featured in Dobama Theatre's 30th Annual Marilyn Bianchi Children's Playwriting Festival. Creative Writing major, Olivia Jackson was a national finalist for Scenarios? National Student Screenwriting Contest and received a scholarship to attend Columbia University in NYC. Abbey White was a state finalist for the Ohio Center for the Book's "Letters About Literature" Competition in conjunction with the Library of Congress. Also, Lauren Nichols won first place for fiction in Ursuline College's Ohio Writers for Tomorrow Regional Competition.
