7th Annual CSA New Play, Film and Poetry Festival
April 15-25, 2008
The Cleveland Play House Theatre's Brooks Theatre
Cleveland is truly a great city for theatre. Included in the community's "Playbill" for this spring season is the 7th Annual New Play, Film and Poetry Festival presented by Friends of Cleveland School of the Arts (FCSA) in association with The Cleveland Play House. Funded by the Ohio Arts Council and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, the Cleveland School of the Arts (CSA) 7th Annual New Play, Film and Poetry Festival will run April 15-25, 2008 at The Cleveland Play House's historic Brooks Theatre (8500 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland). CSA's talented and ambitious students write, direct, and perform original plays; write, direct, and edit their own films; and recite their own poetry. Comprised of seven fully staged student-run plays, four staged readings of plays, six student films, two dozen poems, and a musical theatre cabaret, the New Play, Film and Poetry Festival is unlike any festival of new work by teenagers in the country!
The New Play, Film and Poetry Festival offers a prism into the teenage mind that is profound, sometimes amusing, other times troubling, and always thought provoking. The plays, satirical and serious, deal with an array of subjects focusing on issues including race, drug abuse, spirituality, teen pregnancy, love, and the struggle for human dignity. One student's play centers on the relationship between a streetwise teenage girl murder suspect and a court appointed therapist who finds that despite the profound differences between them, they share similar demons. Another student's play takes an inside farcical look at a mental institution where the eccentricities of the patients are eclipsed by the truly insane craving of the instution's Head Psychiatrist for approval.
The CSA New Play, Film and Poetry Festival is a celebration of the students' creativity, a dedication to their capacity for personal expression, and a testament to their desire to achieve their dreams. No other high school comes close to producing a festival of new work of this magnitude or depth.
The 7th Annual CSA New Play, Film and Poetry Festival will be performed on:
